Participants in research
Ryan Smith (Group Leader)
Dr. Ryan Smith is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Cal State East Bay. He did his Ph.D. research at JILA and the University of Colorado in the group of Dr. Steven Cundiff, where he used ultrafast pulses of light to measure nonlinear interactions in semiconductor quantum well structures. After graduating in 2010, Dr. Smith has been involved in research in Korea and the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, in projects including quantum dot solar cells, multidimensional spectroscopy of nanostructures, and time-resolved terahertz studies of graphene. Since the fall of 2015, his lab at Cal State East Bay is investigating the ultrafast properties of novel nanometerials.

Student Research Assistants
Nathan Wright
Nathan Wright is from San Jose. He completed an Associates Degree from Mission College and is now pursuing a B.S. in Physics at Cal State East Bay. Nathan is inspired how science on the nanoscale relates to the properties of materials, and is excited to use lasers to uncover these connections. Nathan enjoys singing and playing piano in his spare time. |
Nathan Magno
Nathan Magno is from Fremont, California and is currently an undergraduate at California State University East Bay pursuing a B.S. in Physics. Nathan also received his Associates Degree in Science for Computer Aided Design - Mechanical from De Anza College in Cupertino, California. Currently he is a Cal Bridge Scholar for the northern California area. He is planning to attend graduate school after receiving his B.S. and wants to concentrate on particle physics at the moment.

Jabr Abumaali
Jabr Abumaali is a Master's student in the Mathematics department at Cal State East Bay, with an expected graduation of May 2020. He completed his Physics Bachelor's degree at UCLA, where he focused on circuits/electronic devices, with a bit of research experience at UCLA's LArge Plasma Device (LAPD). He is interested in data analysis techniques, and hopes to study more about mathematical optimization in his time at CSU East Bay. Jabr can be found working on motorcycles, tinkering with electronics, or baking desserts in his spare time.

Paul Nguyen
Paul Nguyen is from Santa Clara, California, and is currently an undergraduate student at California State East Bay. He expects to graduate in May 2019 with a major in Computer Engineering and a minor in Mathematics. He hopes to deepen his understanding of Physics, its applications, and research methodology. In his spare time he enjoys being social as he prepares for graduate school.
